“Volāre”

In this collection, Volāre, I wanted to highlight some of my favorite creatures - those who have claimed the skies. As my exploration of mixed media embroidery grows, I continue to push myself to explore the boundaries of this medium. What better collection to draw on three dimensional techniques than one that highlights flight? Traditionally, depth in embroidery is created using a technique called ‘stumpwork’ which utilizes fabric and wire to lift elements from the page. In these pieces, I have used bark, salmon leather, wire, and beadwork to accomplish the task. I hope these pieces lift out of the “page” and into your heart, as they have done for me.

“Stitched For the Future”

Stitched for the Future (2023) is a collection of mixed-media fiber art pieces that explore the stories of beautiful creatures around the world. Each piece was diligently hand embroidered onto a natural canvas of sustainably harvested birch tree bark or salmon leather that I tan and dye by hand. The larger works can take up to 100 hours of labor. In pursuit of preserving the future of our wildlife, a portion of the proceeds will be donated directly to conservation programs worldwide.

This theme was born out of a desire to highlight uplifting stories of successful conservation programs throughout the world and, additionally, to delight viewers with the joy of unique and charismatic organisms. According to the World Wildlife Foundation, we lose a staggering 10,000-100,000 species each year. It is easy to get lost in the heartbreak and forget to celebrate the incredible successes that wildlife warriors worldwide have made.

Many of these pieces are available for purchase - please contact me with any inquiries.

Hand Painted and Hand Embroidered

All pieces are first painted using handmade watercolors directly onto the birch bark. Then, I use modern hand embroidery techniques to add texture and details to the piece.

Sustainably Harvested Birch Bark

I hand harvest all of the birch bark for my original pieces from fallen trees around Alaska. While bark is more supple when taken from a live tree, the damage it can cause to the trees is something I try to avoid.
