Tree swallows (Tachycineta bicolor) are small aerial insectivores - frequently seen chasing insects with acrobatic twists and turns. They are found throughout most of North America, with the upper extent of their breeding range around Fairbanks, AK. They nest in hollow trees and readily take to nest boxes. Because of this, they are easily and frequently studied by researchers! The Alaska Songbird Institute partners with Alaskan scientists to study population trends and breeding phenology (changes in seasonal timing) in Tree Swallows. Due to global climates changes, we are seeing a decline in aerial insectivores throughout their ranges (especially in the north) - these gregarious little birds are doing their part to help scientists learn more and hopefully preserve future populations.
