Ursus arctos horribils - Grizzly Bear - Fine Art Print

from $28.00

This gorgeous summer hunter is chasing after her favorite prey in hopes to fill her fat stores for winter!

Grizzly bears are a member of the brown bear species which are found in North America, Europe, and Asia. Traditionally grizzlies (U. arctos horribilis) were distributed throughout western United States, central Mexico, western Canada, and Alaska. In the 1800s, populations were estimated at about 50,000 grizzly bears throughout the US but by the 1930s their numbers were reduced to approximately 2% of their former range. By 1975, populations in the contiguous 48 states were reduced to between 700 and 800.

Targeted recovery in the contiguous US began in 1993 with 6 major recovery areas where efforts would be focused:

  • Greater Yellowstone (NW Wyoming, EA Idaho, SW Montana)

  • Northern Continental Divide (N-C Montana

  • North Cascades (N-C Washington)

  • Selkirk (N Idaho, NE Washington, SE British Columbia)

  • Cabinet-Yaak (NW Montana, N Idaho)

  • Bitterroot (Central Idaho, W Montana)

Estimates now put populations in the contiguous 48 states at approximately 1900 individuals. However, Alaska grizzly populations are estimated at about 30,000!
