Niklliq - Sockeye Salmon - Fine Art Print

from $28.00

In the traditional lands of the Alutiiq People (Kenai Peninsula, Kodiak Archipelago, and the Alaska Peninsula) these beautiful fish known as “Niklliq” were carefully harvested and deeply respected for their gifts to the People.

Sockeye salmon are a staple of life here in Alaska. These incredible fish are filled with the rugged beauty that is at the heart of so many people who call this land home. For more than 10 years, the threat of an open-pit copper and gold mine (the Pebble Mine) threatened one of the most pristine sockeye salmon spawning areas in Alaska. Beginning with the efforts of a handful of Alaska Native tribes, the petition to the EPA to protect this important watershed was begun. In 2020, a key permit for this mine was denied. As of 2021, the EPA has yet to fully protect the Bristol Bay watershed - you can learn more about this important project and what you can do to help by visiting www.savebristolbay.org
