Limited Edition Print "Night Lights" - 8x10

$168.00

Limited Edition prints are hand embellished by the artist to enhance the texture and depth of these remarkable pieces. Embroidery is added to selected locations where it will best highlight the details within the piece. These prints are limited to only 50 total. As these are made-to-order, please allow 1-2 weeks to ship.

The aurora borealis and its southern counterpart - the aurora australis - are absolutely breathtaking displays of light that occur near the magnetic poles due to interactions of charged particles emitted by the sun with Earth's atmosphere.

When these charged particles, emitted as solar wind, interact with gasses in the upper atmosphere, the atoms and molecules of the gasses become excited and emit light! The colors we see depend on the type of gasses encountered and the altitude at which the collision occurs. Green, the most common, is caused by oxygen at lower altitudes. Red typically occurs at higher altitudes and is also due to oxygen collisions. Finally, blue and purple are caused by exciting molecules of nitrogen gas. The best time to see these displays are around the spring and autumn equinoxes!

This limited edition of my original piece “Night Lights” . Each signed and numbered one of 50 will come with a stamped certificate of authenticity.

Please note: this is a paper print of an original piece - all of the aurora has been added back using metallic embroidery thread to enhance the lights and make them shine like the original!
