Sea Otters are an incredibly important member of their coastal communities. As a keystone species, they help maintain balance in the ecosystem by managing populations of predatory urchins who, if left unchecked, can decimate kelp forests.
Their numbers were decimated due to the fur trade, and though their populations are increasing due to conservation efforts and hunting bans, they remain on the endangered species list. They have been eliminated from much of their historic range, leaving coastal ecosystems at risk. Fortunately, there are people working on helping!
This piece comes from the “Endangered Species Challenge” series - 25% of the proceeds of these prints will go to the Elakha Alliance (elakhaalliance.org) whose goal is to reintroduce sea otters to the Oregon coast where they once thrived.
“Dobhar-chu” comes from a legendary cryptid - the king otter - who has haunted the shores of Glendale Lake in Co. Leitrim, Ireland. A fearsome tale for such an adorable creature!
