Danaus plexippus - Fine Art Print

from $28.00

This well-known and charismatic butterfly, the monarch (Danaus plexippus) is widely distributed throughout North America as well as Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, Spain, and the Pacific islands. It is most notable for its incredible cross-continental migration in North America. The migratory population was listed as endangered in 2022 as populations overwintering in Mexico have seen a long-term decline.

In Mexico, Homero González was one of the most well-known monarch butterfly advocates. He managed El Rosario Monarch Butterfly Preserve. A former logger, he was instrumental in advocating for anti-logging efforts. By creating a wildlife preserve he showed that investing in eco-tourism was an effective method of replacing logging income and preserving the livelihood of former loggers and farmers. A portion of the proceeds of this piece will be donated to the Monarch Butterfly Fund to support their mission to “foster the conservation of North American Monarch butterflies and their migration through habitat restoration, research, monitoring, education and community development in and near the monarch overwintering areas in Mexico.”
